When we go to the dentist to have a tooth pulled, it sometimes can make us a little nervous. It’s understandable to be nervous, but not every tooth extraction is scary and complicated. Most of the time, when patients have a tooth pulled, it falls under the category of simple tooth extraction. There’s not much need to worry about a ton of pain, anesthesia, aftercare, or getting referred to an oral surgeon because your typical dentist can perform a nonsurgical tooth extraction.
A simple tooth extraction means any tooth extraction that can be performed without surgery or any extraction that is not complex. The two types of tooth extractions are simple tooth extractions and complex tooth extractions. A patient doesn’t necessarily have to be put under for a tooth extraction to be complex; it only needs to be that the tooth cannot just be pulled directly out and must be excised or cut out in some way.
For example, when we think of a wisdom tooth extraction, we are talking about the complex type of extraction where a patient has to have the teeth surgically removed either because they have become impacted or have grown unnaturally.
The truth is, nonsurgical wisdom tooth extraction is possible. For it to be considered a simple wisdom tooth extraction, the tooth has to be pulled out like any other front or back tooth without cutting into the gumline or digging the tooth out. This doesn’t happen often, but it is possible.
In most cases, a simple extraction is done by your general dentist in the chair like any other procedure. The dentist may numb the affected area, but no other anesthesia is given. The dentist will pull the tooth using pliers or another dental tool.
He will then clean up the hole where the tooth was, possibly packing it with gauze after the procedure is complete. Most simple extractions only take a few moments, and there is little to no pain or recovery time involved throughout the process. The only time this is not the case is with several simultaneous extractions.
The extraction itself is often rather quick. The longest part of the procedure is usually the time it takes for the patient to react to the numbing medication. Once the medication takes effect, we will work quickly to remove the tooth. If you are suffering from pain, extractions will relieve you of your discomfort.
